Overview One Mission, Many Responsibilities The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation, or FDIC, is one of the most respected forces in America's financial community. The FDIC symbol guarantees to depositors that they can depend on up to $250,000 of deposit insurance. At the FDIC, our mission is to maintain the stability of and public confidence in the nation's financial system by insuring deposits and promoting safe and sound banking practices. Accomplishing this mission takes integrity, commitment, intelligence and a great deal of teamwork. The separate, yet synergistic approach of each division allows our employees to work smart, together and at the highest level of excellence. Division of Administration Division of Administration We provide administrative and management services to support the career development, consulting, human resources, corporate and acquisition services of the Corporation. A variety of management and administrative support positions are available in Washington, DC. Division of Finance We provide the FDIC with accounting and financial services that keep the corporate books and books of financial institutions in receivership, and provide management reports to our customers. We assist in closing institutions that have failed and provide liquidation accounting, and manage the FDIC's business planning and budget programs. We serve as a critical support organization giving other Divisions within FDIC value-added support. We put decision-making tools in the hands of managers of other Divisions, allowing them to do their job more effectively. We hire mainly Accountants and Financial Analysts to work in our Washington, DC and Dallas, TX locations. Both of these careers offer variety and increasing amounts of responsibility that requires integrity, the ability to work with a team and customers, and excellent analytical skills. Division of Information Technology We provide information technology to FDIC and its customers. DIT is strategically directed, customer-focused and results-driven. We work with other divisions and offices to identify appropriate information technology and provide it where and when it is needed. We have many new and interesting initiatives to pursue on behalf of the Corporation. Replacing workstations and software; replacing servers and utilizing new server technology; rolling out our e-business channel to 9,000+ insured banks; replacing core financial systems; using a new, performance-based approach to help desk and customer support; continuing to improve information security; revamping bank data processing; continuing the replacement of our human resources systems; and much more. We will also be focusing on improving customer communications and service; architectural management; and internal communications. We build integrated systems to identify, analyze and report on current and emerging risks to deposit insurance funds; provide efficient data access and retrieval tools; and increase the ability of FDIC supervised banks to submit required information via the Internet/extranet. We utilize videoconferencing for meetings, reduce training travel using IP/TV technology and eliminate paper forms processing through the use of workflow applications. In an effort to provide secure financial transactions, data transmissions and data storage, we have implemented PKI with Smart Card technology and stronger user authentication, and security monitoring to detect and respond to network intrusions as they occur. When hiring, we look for knowledge of PC operating systems and software products; skill in Web development; knowledge of Microsoft Office and related applications; system design and development experience; the ability to communicate; and the ability to work on a team. Division of Insurance and Research We analyze risks facing banks and FDIC deposit insurance funds. More specifically, we follow developments in various industries, commercial and industrial lending, consumer lending and other activities nationwide and regionally to monitor trends and keep abreast of potential risks. We also compile financial and economic data and surveys, including industry trends and market developments, and conduct analyses of policy issues facing FDIC. Our results are published quarterly. We hire mostly Financial Analysts, Banking Analysts and Financial Economists, as well as Statisticians and Economists who do research and policy analysis. Since our mission is information intensive, we also have a need for Information Technologists and individuals with excellent writing abilities. Positions are available in Washington, DC or at one of our regional/area offices in Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX/Memphis, TN (area office); Kansas City, MO; New York, NY/Boston, MA (area office) and San Francisco, CA. Division of Resolutions and Receiverships We plan and manage the resolutions of failing FDIC-insured institutions and provide efficient administration to them. We hire Resolution and Receivership Specialists to work in our Washington, DC and Dallas, TX offices, performing work related to the marketing of failed institutions, the prompt payment of a failed bank's insured deposits, and the sale of assets in the most cost-efficient manner. Duties include compiling and analyzing financial data and reports, participating in financial institution closing activities and assisting with the development and administration of asset marketing strategies and sales. Positions normally require a degree in business, finance, accounting or a related field. Qualified candidates also need the ability to work on a variety of financial, business and technological challenges. In addition, you must be able to communicate effectively and work well in a team environment. Division of Supervision and Consumer Protection We are responsible for conducting examinations of state-chartered institutions that are not members of the Federal Reserve System, and monitoring the condition of national and state-member banks. Working closely with other regulatory agencies such as the Federal Reserve, Comptroller of Currency and Office of Thrift Supervision, we promote financial institution compliance of institutions with fair lending and other consumer protection laws by conducting compliance examinations. Assignments are at our regional/area offices in Atlanta, GA; Chicago, IL; Dallas, TX/Memphis, TN (area office); Kansas City, MO; New York, NY/Boston, MA (area office); San Francisco, CA; and Washington, DC. Legal Division We provide comprehensive legal services in support of all FDIC activities, from sound operation of insured institutions to the resolution of insolvent institutions. We hire Attorneys for various locations around the nation. Our largest offices are in Washington, DC and Dallas, TX. Office of Enterprise Risk Management We are the corporate oversight manager for internal controls and risk management. We ensure that FDIC operates in an environment conducive to strong internal controls, and in partnership with all divisions and offices to help them identify, evaluate, monitor and manage their risks. There are three core values that guide our staff and operations:
Office of Legislative Affairs The Office of Legislative Affairs serves as the agency's congressional liaison and closely monitors and responds to legislation important to the FDIC. Office of Ombudsman The FDIC Office of the Ombudsman is an independent, neutral and confidential source of information and assistance to anyone affected by the FDIC's regulatory role. We answer questions about policies and procedures, provide referrals to subject matter experts within the corporation and aid in the resolution of complaints against the FDIC, working with all parties to reach an acceptable solution. We are an advocate for fair process and do not take sides. Employee matters are handled on an exception-only basis, providing services that are not sufficiently and/or effectively provided by any other corporate program. In general, we handle only those matters for which FDIC management has requested our assistance. We do not replace the National Treasury Employees Union or any formal complaint or grievance process. Office of Public Affairs The Office of Public Affairs administers the public information programs of the FDIC, including external and internal communications, by providing information to the media, financial institutions, consumers, and others about the FDIC, its operations, organization, current developments, and history.
